What is KYC in online gambling?
KYC is industry shorthand for Know Your Customer. For remote gambling in Great Britain, operators have to establish a customer’s identity before they are allowed to gamble.
Identity first
What is being checked?
The basic identity details
Name
Your legal identity may be checked electronically or against reliable documents.
Address
The operator may check that the address on the account matches reliable information and remains reasonably up to date.
Date of birth
Your age and identity have to be established before remote gambling is allowed.
Electronic or documentary?
Why you may never be asked to upload ID
Operators can use reliable electronic sources to verify the required details. If those checks produce a clear and current match, there may be no need to ask you for documents. Customers should also be told before depositing what identity information might be required later and when it could be requested.
Data source → Identity established
No upload may be needed.
When documents are needed
A failed match usually changes the method, not the purpose
You have moved
A recent address change may not yet appear consistently across external records.
Your name has changed
The operator may need evidence linking previous records with your current details.
Electronic checks do not match
If an electronic check is incomplete or inconclusive, another reliable source may be needed.
Payment ownership
This is a separate question. The operator may need to establish who owns or controls a payment method used on the account.
