Learn · Verification & Due Diligence

Why is a gambling company asking me for documents?

Being asked for documents can feel more serious than it is. Sometimes it is a straightforward identity check. Sometimes the operator is looking at where money came from, who owns a payment method, or whether gambling may be causing financial harm. Those are different questions and they should not all be labelled EDD.

The basic process

Where extra checks can enter the picture

  1. 01

    Account opened

Identity and age checks are completed.

  2. 02

    Account in use

The operator continues to monitor the account and transactions.

  3. 03

    A question comes up

It may relate to identity, payments, AML or safer gambling.

  4. 04

    Information requested

The operator asks for information linked to that question.

  5. 05

    Review

The evidence and explanation are considered together.

  6. 06

    Outcome

The account may be verified, restricted, cleared, limited or closed depending on the issue.

Three different reasons

Not every check is enhanced due diligence

Identity & account

Who are you, and are the account details correct?

This can cover name, address, date of birth and ownership of a payment method.

AML / financial crime

Where did the money come from, and does the activity make sense?

The detailed casino AML regime is not identical to the wider obligations that apply across the gambling sector.

Safer gambling

Is there evidence of financial vulnerability or gambling-related harm?

This can lead to customer interaction, limits or other proportionate action.
