Source of funds vs source of wealth

The phrases sound similar, but they are not asking the same question. Source of funds follows particular money. Source of wealth looks at the wider financial story behind the person using it.

Source of funds

This money

Where did the specific money being used for gambling or a transaction come from, and how did it reach the operator?

Example

Salary → bank account → gambling deposit

Think about the origin and route of the particular funds.

Source of wealth

The bigger picture

How did the person build the wider assets, income or net worth that sit behind their current financial position?

Example

Career + business + property + investments

Think about whether the overall financial position makes sense in context.

Common misunderstandings

Three answers that do not quite answer the question

It came from my bank

That tells the operator where the money was held. It does not necessarily explain where the money originally came from.

My salary is £X

Income can be part of the picture, but salary alone may not explain a much larger overall level of wealth.

I sent a document

A document helps only if it supports the explanation the operator is trying to verify.
