SENSE Explained: Self-Exclusion for UK Casinos

SENSE is the national self-exclusion scheme for land-based casinos in Great Britain. It exists to help individuals who want to stop gambling in physical casino environments by preventing access across participating venues.

What Is SENSE?

SENSE is a multi-operator self-exclusion programme covering participating land-based casinos licensed in Great Britain. Once enrolled, participating casinos are required to:

How SENSE Works in Practice

SENSE registration can be completed in person at a participating casino or through the official online self-enrolment portal. Government-issued identification, a photograph and a signature are required. Applications may take up to three working days to be applied at all casinos.

• Staff are required to deny entry
• Attempts to access gaming facilities are treated as breaches

The minimum requested period is six months and can be extended to 12 months from enrolment. A further six-month Thinking Period follows. During that period a person may request renewal or, in person with a casino manager, removal; a successful removal request is followed by a 24-hour cooling-off period. The official terms explain separate transitional arrangements for some enrolments made before 16 December 2024.

Enforcement and Identification in Larger Casino Groups

Enforcement of SENSE relies on both staff intervention and supporting systems. In larger UK casino groups, this can include the use of enhanced identification technologies, such as facial recognition and biometric-assisted systems, as part of wider security and safer gambling controls.

These systems may be used to:

• Identify excluded individuals attempting to enter
• Support entrance and floor staff in enforcing exclusions
• Reduce reliance on manual recognition alone

Facial recognition is not used in isolation and does not replace staff judgement. Its use is subject to data protection law, internal governance, and proportionality requirements. As a result, individuals enrolled in SENSE should not assume they can enter undetected, particularly in larger or higher-footfall casino environments.

What Happens If You Breach SENSE

Under the current SENSE terms, if an enrolled person or a third party acting for them gambles at a participating casino while the exclusion remains in place, money staked and winnings arising from those stakes are forfeited, except where the casino considers the circumstances exceptional.

In practice:

• Money staked and winnings arising from those stakes are forfeited under the scheme terms
• Gambling losses are not reimbursed

The current terms do not state that forfeited money is donated to charity, so no such outcome should be assumed.

SENSE vs GAMSTOP

SENSE and GAMSTOP serve different environments. SENSE applies to participating land-based casinos licensed in Great Britain, while GAMSTOP applies to online gambling websites and apps licensed in Great Britain. A crypto payment method does not determine coverage; licensing status does.
